Cancer, a six-letter word that strikes fear when mentioned. Nearly everyone knows someone who has been affected by this disease. Thankfully, over the years, more research has been done on how to prevent breast cancer and even more is now known about the treatments and also risk factors.

While some factors such as family history can’t be changed, you do have control over your lifestyle choices in order to reduce the risk of breast cancer. As the saying goes, prevention is the best cure

The number of cancer patients globally has been increasing at an “alarming pace”, according to WHO, and is expected to continue to rise to an annual number of 19.3 million by 2025.

Breast cancer is the number 1 most common cancer for women in Singapore. However, only 5-10% of these cases occur due to genetic causes. Moreover, as our life spans increase, so does the risk of cancer.

So, can breast cancer be prevented? Below, we’ll talk about steps that you can take to prevent breast cancer naturally. But first, let’s explore some of its causes.

Causes of breast cancer

  • The density of your breast – If you have a high amount of breast tissue as compared to fat, you have a ‘high breast density’. This increases the risk of breast cancer.
  • Age of puberty – The earlier of the onset of puberty for an individual also increases risk of breast cancer
  • Hormone treatment
  • Obesity
  • Age (over 65)
  • Family history
  • In TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, the cause of breast cancer is inflammation

Does it help if I go for regular mammograms and checkups?

Even with annual or bi-annual checkups, detection of breast cancer would mean that cancerous cells have already developed in your body.

Moreover, if you have breast cancer, the likelihood of you getting other types of cancer increases. This includes the recurrence of breast cancer or the occurrence of a new cancer in a different part of your body.

How can you not only detect, but actively prevent the development of breast cancer?

Preventing breast cancer

Bringing a perfect harmony of eastern and western wellness practices, here are 5 steps to prevent breast cancer:

1. Be physically active/Maintain a healthy weight

Being overweight is known to increase the risk of not only breast cancer but also many diseases, such as high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke amongst others. Thus, it’s important to be physically active.

Moderate to vigorous physical activity is proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer. The recommended moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, would take you 2.5 to 5 hours per week. Or you can choose to do vigorous, high-intensity exercises, such as running or HIIT.

2. Protect your liver

If you want to live your life, love your liver.

The more alcohol you drink, the higher your risk of developing breast cancer, or any cancer in general, according to the National Cancer Institute. It is recommended that your alcohol intake should be limited to 1 standard drink per day.

In Chinese medicine, breast cancer is often related to the liver qi stagnation, which is an Eastern way of describing an overtaxed liver. To stimulate the liver, you can drink lemon juice. You can also take liver-supporting herbs including dandelion root, milk thistle, burdock, artichoke and turmeric.

Flaxseed oil is also recommended to support liver function as it reduces the amount of fat and damage to the liver.

To further support your liver, make sure to sleep by midnight as the liver detox hour for this organ is between 1am and 3am daily. This helps to ensure that your liver can clean and repair itself effectively.

3. Breastfeed (if possible)

Did you know that breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer in women?

This is because most women who breastfeed experience hormonal changes that may delay the return of their menstrual periods. This, in turn, reduces her exposure to hormones such as estrogen, which are linked to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

Moreover, throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding, women shed breast tissue, which helps remove cells with potential DNA damage, thus helping to decrease the chances of developing breast cancer.

4. Avoid hormone treatment or birth control pills

As you get older, the risks of hormone therapy increases (especially if you’re over 35). The most common form of this for women is prescription birth control pills.

While birth control has its benefits, you should consider its risks too. Controlling how much estrogen you take in is important, as this leads to various negative effects on the body. In fact, the risk of cervical and breast cancer is increased while on the pill.

While birth control pills have their drawbacks, they also have benefits such as reducing the risk of ovarian cancer. Weighing the pros and cons for yourself is important, and you should discuss these with your doctor before starting on them.

5. Having a healthy diet

Having a healthy diet not only reduces your risk of breast cancer but also other diseases such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and other types of cancer. You are, after all, what you consume.

For example, women consuming the Mediterranean diet where olive oil and plenty of fish is eaten have a reduced risk of breast cancer, as opposed to eating a diet which consists of red meat.

Consider including cruciferous vegetables in your diets, such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and Brussel sprouts. These contain a phytonutrient called diindolylmethane (DIM) which supports the activity of enzymes that improve estrogen metabolism.

Additionally, research shows that our body has a biological clock that affects our bodily function such as hormone release, body temperature, and eating habits and digestion. In TCM, the body clock is based on the concept of qi or energy. Over the course of 24 hours, qi is believed to move in 2-hour intervals throughout the organ systems, precisely performing different functions during different times of the day.

In saying this, be mindful of the timing of your meals, as better alignment with your natural body clock can help promote better digestion.

6. Use Matrixcell as part of your daily routine

Matrixcell is a clinically advanced and pharmaceutical grade cream that supports healthy breast tissues for breast health protection. It’s also scientifically proven to stabilise the extracellular matrix (ECM).

What is ECM, you may ask? ECM controls the lifespan of the cell. It is part of a tissue that provides structural support for the cells and performs important functions throughout the body. Chronic inflammation disrupts and destabilises proper ECM structure and function in human tissues, such as breast tissues. Hence, the stabilisation of ECM represents a defence against the onset and progression of breast cancer.

Matrixcell also helps decrease tissue inflammation and prevent the growth of a new tumour. It also encapsulates and renders tumour dormant, preventing further growth and the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. Lastly, it helps reduce or neutralise uncharged molecules and prevent cellular oxidative damage.

Besides giving stability to ECM of the breast, what exactly are the characteristics of Matrixcell that makes it effective in preventing breast cancer?

1. Absorption is key to effectiveness in the prevention of breast cancer. Matrixell technology, called transdermal orthomolecular mechanism (TOMM), is the deep penetration of active ingredients into the ECM of the breast. This formulation stabilises ECM.
2. It also has a synergistic potent formulation (plant-based molecules) that uses all-natural ingredients. It means it has no parabens, no steroids, no non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

The effective dosing of Matrixcell is 1-2 fingertip-sized amounts of cream per breast/day for the first 30-60 days of treatment, followed by maintenance dosing of 3-5 times a week thereafter.

Understanding the 5 Elements in TCM – Which One Are You?

On the other hand, Traditional Chinese Medicine’s (TCM) basic philosophy is to treat the person as a whole by diagnosing both symptoms and a person’s overall body condition. It does this by understanding a person’s body based on the 5 elements theory. These elements are namely Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. This theory has been used in TCM diagnosis as early as ancient China’s “Warring States Period (476-221 BC). Each element represents a particular body organ, emotion, and meridian.
